Each part of razor edge needs equal 'mileage' on stone, and hopefully each part of stone gets equal time cutting razor's edge, too. Use strokes which vary the blade's exposure to hone over the course of travel, or try strokes which allow the entire razor along the hone, catering to its unique physical dimensions. Don't be afraid to learn the toe-first stroke, it is a valuable tool.

Today on Repairs101: I'm going to show you how to throw a quick edge on your saw using nothing but a couple of files -- the way you do it out in the bush. Installing the New Wicked Edge Ball Joint Arms

Got everything working great, thanks Clay for getting these arms out for me to try out. I can already see an improvement in edge perfection from the elimination of slop. This was supposed to be quick but ran into a couple issues like not knowing which way the arms go on & having to grind the square rod so they would slide on. Had to polish the rough surface of the arm rods to reduce friction. Have some stones that do not fit onto the thicker rods also.

After like a hundred requests I'm compelled to do a sharpening video...maybe more to follow. Using an EZE-LAP Fine Diamond oval shaped diamond sharpener (Knivesplus.com, EZ-D10F, ) and a 13" Lansky sharpening steel, I show how I re-sharpen an AG Russell kitchen knife. Keep your edge angle very consistent on both rods, using enough passes to bring out the edge you desire. The diamond stone actually produces micro serrations in the steel which will cut very effectively. I find the edge is more durable and even sharper however if honed a bit on the steel, using care not to roll the tip (in video). I do use other systems occasionally but this is my current favorite. That's because this is the fastest way I'm able to bring out an edge again in a knife. Note: Suppliers and models of the referenced sharpeners will change. I note my original sources for reference and to maybe help save you time.

Knifemaking Tuesdays Week 39 - polishing, sharpening, custom stop pins

For week 39 Erik and I were busy anodizing lots of knives, experimenting with new colors and with the Multi-Etch chemical. At the 8:00 minute mark I show how I used a propane blowtorch to heat anodize a set of handles, you can get some REALLY cool colors and patterns with this method. At 14:28 we do a nice long segment on using our 6" 3M Scotchbrite wheel that we purchased from www.knifemaking.com, it's awesome! This thing deburrs everything and smooths and polishes titanium and blade steel like no other. It leaves an amazing surface finish and smooths out all the milling marks. It's a huge asset to our shop. Erik even goes into detail about how to get a sweet "orange peel" surface finish, which happens when the titanium gets a little hot and starts to smear, when done properly it looks very tasty. 22:13 is where Erik goes into detail about using our Wicked Edge knife sharpening system. It's a very sweet system that comes with many different stones and allows you to upgrade to very very high grit stones and leather strops with diamond lapping compound. With some practice you can achieve mirror polished edges with perfectly flat bevels. We love the wicked edge, but it is very time consuming. At 37:20 I show and describe how I am making custom stop pins to fix a few knives that lock up way too far, I goofed up on a few of them so this is a great way to save them. I was able to use my Tormach mill set up as a lathe to make them out of 17-4PH stainless steel, really good ...

Dissection of the Adult Drosophila CNS. This is a start-to-finish video showing the dissection of a fruit fly brain. The video begins by introducing the tools and materials and then goes through the process step by step. The method is suitable for downstream staining (eg immunohistochemistry or enzymatic) and is intended to be quick. Because the dissection is so quick, it can be (and is) performed in paraformaldehyde fixative - fixing two birds with one stone as it were. There is always a risk of distortion to the brain during dissection (by stretching) which is somewhat minimised by fixation. Most of the materials should be available in a basic laboratory - the most critical is very very sharp forceps (tweezers). The video shows a sharpening stone and you should sharpen your own tools for the best results. The video has been converted from an old 1993 VHS format with no soundtrack but a written protocol and associated example images have been on-line since the 90's at flybase.org which I believe makes it one of the earliest on-line protocols in bioscience. Comments welcomed even though I have moved up the evolutionary scale to work on arabidopsis now :) . .

My review of the Bear Grylls Gerber Survival Sharpener BLUF, (Bottom Line Up Front) it is good enough for a Bugout bag but not some premium sharpening tool. For the I paid for it, NIB (New In Box), it does the job of being a field sharpening tool for emergency/bugout and survival purposes which is what it is labeled as. It could stand a few improvements like making both diamond grit coated sharpening rods rotate (only the small one does) as well as making the sheath into a handle extension but otherwise is good for keeping your knife sharp. THIS IS NOT A BENCH SHARPENING TOOL. The diamond grit will not last forever, the draw through sharpener is only a temporary sharpening implement. I recommend a good sharpening stone for your bench along with a good sharpening steel and a leather and canvas strop. Since all of that is quite heavy for a Bugout bag or rucksack, this tool along with a good double sided whet stone will have to do.

Here are some things I've been trying out through trial & error. This is the best sharpener on the market in my opinion & like so many of the best things out there, there are some things that have room for improvement. I would like to see some improved tolerances of the u joints & the rod inside the stones, there is a lot of play that needs to be reduced. Just remember to dri-lube your u joints & get the metal shavings off of your diamond stones when your done & this system should be the last thing you buy to sharpen a knife. This video is about re-sharpening a Haltfors carbon (convexed) that has too much damage for a strop to re-sharpen. Using a waterstone not a mouse mat or belt sander.... This knife cost me £3.95 and is a excellent knife to practice on..... convexing a scandi knife takes longer because of the amount of steel that needs to be removed. But if you can steepen the sides while still retaining a shallow convex then what you lose to the Scandi on steepness (flat) of the sides of the bevel you gain with its thinner gentle graduation of the bevel. My favourite carving wood at the moment is spalted Beech which can be almost Oak like in its hardness..... but as yet i have never had edge roll or any type of catastrophic edge failure. To me this is proof that the convex edge is the best knife grind for hardwoods. However the Scandi is very easy to strop sharpen and stone sharpen..... The convex however is a little harder to strop sharpen but a lot harder to stone sharpen... At one end of the scale, is the knife convex, at the other is the axe convex, and all that is in between..... so if you have the tenacity to master the art of "convex sharpening" then you can literally choose the amount of convex to suit a particular tool for a particular job.

Bug Out/Survival Bag Update

I picked up a few more items for my bugout, bob, shtf, survival, get out of dodge, wrol, zombie apocalypse, I'm hungry and I want some spaceman icecream bag. Thanks for all the suggestions and please keep them comming! My bag is a work in progress and my main goal for the bag is answering the question; "If I can put anything I want in this bag, up to 40lbs total, what do I bring?". Then the question might be expanded to 50lbs later. It's interesting to me to note that if we're limited to what we can carry, (which we are) a value can be assigned to objects, food, ect based on thier weight. Once the items are chosen for the bag and the weight reached, then they can be re-evaluated to see if the best choices were made, or if there may be something better! As an aside, I don't think I'll ever actually need to use this bag for it's intended purpose, I just find it fun to challenge my brain, with the added bonus that if I ever actually DO have to use it, I'm all set! There's other benefits of a BOB too though, and I'll discuss some of them in another video. Thanks for watching!
