He had made a mistake on one of his machines and damaged the blade of one of his customers shears. He said it was bent and didn't feel he could fix it. Seemed like a challenge, so I told him to send it on. When I received it I saw what he meant! Boy was this shear bent in a bad spot!!! Right at the early entry! In fact, it was bend so badly it almost looked like the shear had a full bend of set in it, but in the wrong direction. I did my best to let you see this in the video, so watch if you haven't then read the rest. As I said in the video, I had to do some more work to finish this shear; so I went into the sharpening training center and started to resharpen it. While doing so though, I noticed that there was a snake in the blade (this is a bend in the blade that looks like an S) about a 1/4" back from the tip. The blade also looked fatigued so I really didn't want to do a lot of bending on it because I knew it would break. I did a few test passes over my water stone after I bent as much of the snake out of the blade as I dared, but I still didn't have the shear set to the point where I could hone a consistent rideline without causing an unsightly wave. Fortunately, I had a trick up my sleeve, the Ookami Honing Blocks. These blocks are much more forgiving than water stones and come in handy when you have a shear with inconsistent set problems. Steps to Using a Honing Steel --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Get a good honing steel. A good honing steel should have at least a twelve-inch long steel rod. Some may be a little bit shorter, but a longer steel is ideal for most chef's knives. Also, the end of a good honing steel should have a nice point at the end of the steel itself. It should be sharp enough for you to be able to drive the point into your wood or plastic cutting board with just a little bit of downward pressure. 2. Place the tip of the honing steel into your cutting board and gently push down. This will secure the steel rod in place while you run your knife along it. 3. Hold the knife by grabbing it with your middle, ring and pinky fingers around the handle. Your thumb and forefinger should be around the blunt back side of the blade. 4. Twenty degrees is the most common sharpening angle. To figure this out, place the blade right up alongside the steel. This is zero degrees. If you swing the knife out so the blade is perpendicular to the steel, you'll be at ninety degrees. Half of that is forty-five, and another half is twenty-two and a half degrees. A little bit less and you're around twenty degrees. Once you've established the correct angle, start with the heel of the blade at the top of the steel. You'll then flick your wrist ...

Working with big timbers is hard and a tight fitting joint takes a lot of time and concentration. The tools I'm using today are two Robert Sorby timber framing chisels. The large "slick" is very old and was givin to me by my old neighbor Hank. I sharpen my timber framing chisels each day before I start working on the frame. If you keep your tools sharp you work will go much smoother. The best sharpening stone I have found for small hand tools like chisels and axes is a 4" two sided stone manufactured by Norton. The two sided stone is more versatile with it's coarse and fine sides. Be sure to apply a few drops of Kerosene or Diesel to the stone. This will prevent the stone from becoming fouled with metal particles. You may also notice I'm using two mallets. The large orange mallet is from Harbor Freight and is shot filled. Filling a mallet head with shot prevents it from bouncing when you strike an object. The smaller red hand mallet is nice for working with the chisels because it does not glance off the wooden handles and is comfortable in the hand. This video series will give you the knowledge needed to build an survival cabin. Have you always wanted a small cabin in the woods? This video series will demonstrate how mill your own timbers with a Alaskan chainsaw mill. I will also be using a mini mill attachment. The saw I'm using is a Stihl MS441. The Ms441 is a bit to small. I would recommend a Stihl MS066. Working with big timbers is hard and a tight fitting joint takes a lot of time and concentration. The tools I'm using today are two Robert Sorby timber framing chisels. The large "slick" is very old and was givin to me by my old neighbor Hank. I sharpen my timber framing chisels each day before I start working on the frame. If you keep your tools sharp you work will go much smoother. The best sharpening stone I have found for small hand tools like chisels and axes is a 4" two sided stone manufactured by Norton. The two sided stone is more versatile with it's coarse and fine sides. Be sure to apply a few drops of Kerosene or Diesel to the stone. I would not take all of this equipment in every situation, only what would be needed and appropriate depending what the emergency is. I have a mummy style sleeping bag and small air matress. See More, soap bag, sewing kit, crank powered radio/torch, hunting/gutting knife and woodcraft knife, magnesium block, flint striker, whistle, headlamp, binoculars, waterproofs (behind the S10 gas mask) 550 paracord, compass, leatherman, personal alarm, zippo, a mouse trap, fold away cutlery and a small cooking pot. In the possibles pouch I have matches in a waterproof pot made out of an old shot gun cartridge, carabina clips, water purification tablets (also have them in the first aid kit and my water bottle pouch) and other odds and ends that might be usefull. I also have packs of tuna.
